The second of the longest-running daytime talk shows, behind Phil Donahue, who began his program with celebrities and musical acts, Regis Philbin, a veteran talk show host, who began hosting from 1988 until 2011 and Kathie Lee Gifford, a substitute anchor for Good Morning America, who began hosting from 1988 until 2000, and Michael Strahan, a football player, who began hosting from 2012 until 2016 and Ryan Seacrest, a television personality, starting in 2017 and thereafter and Kelly Ripa, a former soap star, beginning in 2001 and beyond, really wanted to do more than just a celebrity talk show, they also wanted to do a trivia chat VIA telephone, that the show telephones a home viewer, and the viewer has to answer the correct question (almost often about the show's recent guest) to win a vacation for themselves and a door prize for a member of the studio audience. In addition to celebrity guests, the show also showcases musical performances, and other recurring segments, including regular features showcasing fashion, food, health, and lifestyle topics. Immediately, Regis's and Kathie Lee's popularity, on the show led to other celebrity talk show hosts such as Joan Rivers, Rosie O'Donnell, Donny and Marie Osmond, Ellen DeGeneres and Rachael Ray.
