Wolfe and Montcalm

1957 NR 29m 6

This historical short looks at the circumstances, the plans, and speculates on the thoughts of the the two generals leading up to the historic battle on the Plains of Abraham in 1759.

Tuesday, September 11th, 1759. The City of Québec, French controlled, has been under siege for eleven weeks by the British, the two sides in what seems to be a stalemate. General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, leading the French forces, is fighting battles on two fronts, the other being with the governor who he knows is doing nothing from preventing his men from pillaging scarce resources at the expense of the army. General James Wolfe, leading the British forces, knows that their many losses thus far are on his shoulders. As such, he knows it will be a hard sell for his new plan to attack the city from a different trajectory - what many would consider his latest fancy in his goal to be considered the latest great military leader - hence the reason he only tells each officer what he needs to know to carry out his duties in no one but him knowing the exact landing locale, and has only let a few that need to know that he is terminally ill and expects only to live a few more days at the most. This situation sets what would would ensue two days later, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which would change the course of Québec's fate and cement the names of the two Generals in history.
