Tomb of Joseph

2023NR2h 1m8.1

A businessman finds a nearly 200 year old brick room buried under the sidewalk of a newly acquired hotel and in investigating the mystery, takes us along on a journey of historical discovery in the small town of Nauvoo Illinois.

At the time of the construction of the original Nauvoo Temple, the prophet Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, commissioned the construction of a tomb for his family. The existence of the tomb is mentioned in historical records and brought to life in design drawings of the tomb by William Weeks, the architect of the Nauvoo Temple. Because Joseph Smith, Jr. was never buried there, the location of the tomb has been lost in time and eventually no longer widely known by members of the Church. As a businessman explores a brick archway found under the sidewalk of his newly acquired business in Nauvoo, he invites historians along on his journey to share possible locations of the tomb while delving into the history of the church around the period just before and after the martyrdom.
