The Small World of Sammy Lee

1963NR1h 47m7.1

The compère of a seedy strip club struggles to keep one step ahead of the bookies to whom he owes money.

Sammy Lee works as a compere at the Peepshow, a London Soho strip club. He is also a gambling addict, some bad luck at the poker table which has increased his debt to a bookie named Connor to the tune of £300. While he necessarily goes to work at the club, he spends all his time and energy either negotiating to delay payment with Connor's two thugs who are ready to give him a good beating if he doesn't pay in full by the designated time, or making deals with those in his business life for a few quid here and there to make up the three hundred. The methods to get the money do not include taking advantage of certain people in his life or selling his one valuable possession, which he wants to keep for sentimental reasons. Coinciding with this problem is the arrival of an old friend from "home" i.e. Bradford, eighteen year old Patsy who Sammy had told he could help get a job. While a proverbial good girl, Patsy is not naive enough not to know what would be required of her if she were to work at the Peepshow, she who has her own motives in coming to London besides earning money.
