A small town in Auvergne. A woman lays dying of cancer. During the few months she has left, her relatives, each in their own way, cope with her impending death. Her husband and son live life to the full and continue to sleep around while her daughter-in-law nurtures past grudges against the dying woman. Although her death leaves a void in their lives, they must go on.

Monique is dying. Around her gather her unfaithful husband, her son, who is like his father, and her daughter-in-law. We observe them playing with life as she dies.
