A young woman arrives in Los Angeles and is forced to take a job as a 'taxi dancer' in a strip club to financially survive.

Billie is a young woman who arrives in Los Angeles from her rural and impoverished Midwestern town to make her fortune after being seduced by the glamour of Hollywood. She soon finds herself out of money quickly and living on the streets. In desperation, Billie takes a job in the darker side of performing: Taxi Dancing. After passing her "audition" at the Shark Club run by the sleazy owner Miguelito, she quickly learns how to compete with other women for the attention of the clients and money they pay. Billie soon becomes romantically involved in one particular client, a charming but mysterious older man and gambler, named Diamond Jim, who is being hounded by vicious gangsters who want to collect on his debt. At the same time, a younger man named Bobby, a struggling musician and part-time pizza deliveryman, also takes an interest in Billie and tries to persuade her to quit her profession.
