Composer Robert Schumann (Heinreid0, struggles against mental illness, supported by his wife, Klara Wieck Schumann (Hepburn). His composing deteriorates over the years, forcing her to go back to performing to support the family. Johannes Brahms (Walker) initially helps out in the home, but he falls in love with Klara, further affecting Schumann's health.
