Return to 'Giant'

2003 NR 55m 6.7

In the summer of 1955, an army of cameramen, lighting techs and movie stars descended on the small, west Texas town of Marfa to film what has become, "the national movie of Texas."

Legendary director George Stevens comes to west Texas to film Edna Ferber's novel, GIANT. He casts the biggest box office draws of the day, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, then for excitement brings in the newcomer, James Dean. They load up the trains, planes and automobiles and live in Marfa, Texas during the summer of 1955 to film a classic. However, unlike most location shoots, they live among and mingle with the townspeople, and cast many of them as extras. It's a true tale of what happened when Hollywood rubbed up against small-town Texas, and the stories are both funny and poignant. It also features the late Dennis Hopper in his only on-camera recollections of shooting GIANT.
