I Passed for White

1960 NR 1h 33m 6.2

A young girl meets and marries the man of her dreams--only she hasn't told him that she is half-black, and he and his rich family and friends are white.

Biracial but light skinned, Angeleno Bernice Lee is more often than not mistaken for being white, she shunned by both black and white people after the truth of she being biracial is discovered. Although she embraces her heritage, Bernice, against her black grandmother's advice to live life truthfully, heads to New York to start life anew as white under the assumed name Lila Brownell. She is quickly courted by Rick Leyton of a prominent white New England family. Thinking long and hard about it, Lila accepts Rick's proposal of marriage believing that their love for each other will see them through. In the process only confiding in Caucasian Sally Roberts who she considers her one true friend in New York, Lila builds a proverbial house of cards made up of half truths and complete lies that has the potential to come crashing down around her.
