In Toronto, early twenty-somethings Judy Monroe and Roy Kirby are in love and are planning to get married. They understand the obstacles they are facing as husband and wife as Judy is white and Roy is black. Judy's mother is visiting from Trenton specifically to meet Roy. Judy didn't tell her mother previously about Roy being black, stating that she didn't want to make it the focus of who he is, but deep down she was worried about her mother's reaction. Indeed, Mrs. Monroe does not take meeting Roy too well. She later admits to Judy that she doesn't dislike Roy since she doesn't know him, but she is concerned about their future. Although Judy's closest friends are happy for her and like Roy, there are others in her world, including her boss Mr. Wood, and an old suitor named Frank who don't like the idea of Judy being with a black man. And when Roy and Judy have been out together, they still get looks from strangers, and some places refuse to serve Roy. Will their relationship be able to endure these outside strains?
