It was the eighth event under the Extreme Rules chronology. Eight matches were contested at the event (including one match on the pre-show). In the main event, Roman Reigns defeated AJ Styles in a Extreme Rules match to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. After the match, Seth Rollins made his return and attacked Reigns.
