The Curious Works of Roger Doyle

2019 NR 1h 45m 7.6

Documentary about the Irish composer of electronic music Roger Doyle and the staging of his first electronic opera, Heresy, in Dublin in 2016.

"The Curious Works of Roger Doyle" is a documentary which looks at the life's work of Irish composer Roger Doyle as he prepares for the staging of his first electronic opera in Dublin in 2016. The film closely follows the rehearsals and preparations for the staging of this ambitious production and takes a trip through the surreal and otherworldly music of the "Godfather of Irish Electronica". With long-time collaborator, actress Olwen Fouere, Roger has produced music for some truly striking works in Irish avant-garde theatre, and has also produced soundtrack music for Ireland's first wave of film directors; Joe Comerford, Bob Quinn and Cathal Black, all of whom are contributors to the documentary. This film had a cinema release in Ireland in November 2019. On August 3rd 2021, a shorter TV version of the film was screened on Irish television on RTE 1. The shorter television version runs at 80 minutes and omits the extensive section about Roger's film soundtrack work and some of the behind-the-scenes footage of the rehearsals for the Heresy opera.
