In 1975, after a nuclear war, the nations have combined to set up a World Government. An old man who lives quietly in the country finds his peace threatened by a visit from three World Government figures.

It is 1975. The third world war happened soon after the second ended and Britain was devastated by nuclear weapons. The largest town is Shrewsbury and the country is entirely pastoral. After an important mineral is found in the South Downs, the three great powers, USSR, America and India send representatives to organize the mining of the mineral. Due to travel problems in this non-industrial country they have to stay with a local family for much longer than expected. During the stay they are each asked difficult questions about their lives and the societies they come from. The inhabitants of the now non-industrial Britain have no dislike of their pastoral existence. The title of the play comes from a production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" that is being produced by two members of the family.
