Only Two Can Play

1962 NR 1h 46m 6.6

A frustrated librarian (Sellers) in Swansea, Wales is torn between his wife Jean (Markell) and the glamorous, married Liz (Zetterling) who wants to have an affair.

Married with two young children, John Lewis is a financially-struggling full-time librarian and part-time theater critic for the local newspaper in Aberdarcy, Wales. He, however, can't focus on his wife Jean, their children, or work as his mind constantly wanders to others of the opposite sex, especially as one lovely young thing after another enters his view, but he never actually considers committing adultery until wealthy Elizabeth Gruffydd-Williams--Mrs.--enters the library and seems to want to have an affair with him. Her fixation on him extends to a promotion for him, the position which he has thus far placed little effort, which his best friend and colleague, milquetoast Ieuan Jenkins, is working hard behind the scenes to secure himself, and which she implies can be had for John with one word by her prominent husband, councilor Vernon Williams. Entering into a possible affair with Liz is regardless of John's animosity toward local playwright Gareth Probert, a former suitor of Jean's who seems to be waiting in the wings for an opportunity to get her back. What will happen with this foursome, especially as John and Jean still love each other deep in their hearts.
