Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In

2023 TV-PG 27m 5.9

Detective Dick Tracy has a Zoom call with Ben Mankiewicz in which he expresses concern about the lack of realism in Warren Beatty's film about himself; later, Warren himself joins the call.

Ben Mankiewicz watches clips from Dick Tracy Special (2010) in preparation for a Zoom call with Detective Dick Tracy. Ben invites Leonard Maltin, who interviewed Dick for the 2010 special, to join him. Dick talks about an interview that Warren Beatty did with Ben, in which Warren talked about the importance of collaboration in making a film. Dick says that Warren never seemed to be interested in his opinion when he made Dick Tracy (1990) and says that he has fallen out with Warren. Leonard calls Warren to ask him to join the Zoom call. Dick shows clips from the 1990 film and says that it portrayed crime fighting unrealistically and as a musical comedy rather than as serious business. Dick then shows clips from Ralph Byrd and Morgan Conway's portrayals of him in the 1930s and 1940s and praises those depictions. Warren joins the call, and Dick then reiterates his concerns about the 1990 film to Warren. Warren and Dick then agree to meet again for lunch.
