When Allan meets Maria he is sure he has found the perfect woman for him but she's not interested. He persists, she relents, they begin dating. Allan then starts to second guess what he thought he wanted.

Allan Martin is a documentary filmmaker working at the underground i.e. low budget cable station WPCP Channel 39 in New York City. For as long as he can remember, he has wanted to get married, he evaluating his dates and his sexual encounters, casual or otherwise, on the basis of whether the person is wife material for him. That's why he can't understand his best friend Brian Reed, the station news anchor, breaking up with his serious girlfriend Karen in order to pursue a life of casual, emotionally meaningless casual sex. Allan even has a picture in his mind, which he has translated to paper, of his Mrs. Right. He spots her at the most inopportune of times, she Maria Giannini. Allan goes on a determined pursuit of Maria which is hindered initially by the location of their meeting. But even if Allan is able to win Maria over, which seems near impossible, he has a further more fundamental hurdle to overcome: she does not believe in the institution of marriage.
