While Mennick is able to defend Cassie on a seeming path to an acquittal, evidence anonymously makes its way into the hands of the police, such evidence which makes the acquittal less certain. While trusting Mennick, Cassie instead decides a more appropriate course for her to take to protect herself is to investigate on her own, which means not telling anyone that she going into hiding. She is certain that the murder has something to do with a unique custom made necklace given to her by one of the victims, the gift in part to rid of it and its original giver, the purported designer, from that victim's life. In the process, Cassie comes to believe the only person she can trust is Homicide Detective Rudy Shatz, who led the original investigation into the murders. Their partnership leads to their lives being placed in danger as the real murderer begins to feel threatened.
